Ocean Blocks

Ocean Blocks is a series of screenprint-paintings about liminal landscapes and ecological interdependence.

Open water, the ocean that ties the series together, holds the paradoxical associations of surface and depth, constancy and instability.  Coastal systems, where water meets land, are transition zones where certainties are suspended.

The repeating image of open water—the only photo image used in these works—offers a scale and context that are nonetheless unfixed.  Floating. In complex systems of interdependency, autonomy is not viable.  In a liminal state, we can engage with the indeterminacies that shape the natural systems we are part of.
